Happy Hallowe’en Everybody!

With just a little reminder to look out for people on their own who might be intimidated by noise or fireworks – a wee note of support with your phone no. might be appreciated.

“Love does not come to an end” (1 Cor. 13 8)

November is a time when we especially remember those we love who have gone to their eternal reward. Love does not end with death – neither their love for us, nor our love for them, and above all God’s love for us all.

The Church wisely has the Feast of All Saints (November 1st) followed by All Souls Day (November 2nd)

1st Nov. –- when we pray for the dead and thank God that they are now with him in Heaven.
“Be not afflicted – in Heaven I think of you, I love you and, as in life, I am still with you” (St. Bonaventure).
2nd Nov. – when we pray for the dead who still need the encouragement and support of our prayers as they continue their journey towards the Lord.
This is what we mean by the Communion of Saints.

Perhaps this November you might talk to those you loved in this life and whom you still love and who still love you from their heavenly home. Remember “the souls of the just are in the hands of God” (Wisdom). They were reflections of God’s love for you in this life. They still love you and you still love them. Talking to them is prayer! “Love does not come to an end” (St Paul)

Some suggestions for November:
Visit the graves of your loved ones – pray to them and for them.
Come to Mass for them. St Monica as she was dying said to her sons: “Lay this body wherever it may be – this I only ask of you that you should remember me at the Altar of the Lord”.
Pray for those who have no one to remember them.
Visit a Church on November 1st / 2nd.
November is also a time to remind ourselves that we are merely passing through this time to the love that has no end: God.
November Altar List of the Dead` (Envelopes and Forms are available in the Gathering Area)
Remember your deceased loved ones through the seasons of their lives with our Circle of Light. Write the names of your loved ones on the ribbons provided and weave them into the Circle of Life in their memory.

Mass for those who died during the Year Next Sunday 4th November at 10.30 a.m.

Many of whom were your friends and neighbours.
It would be nice to support their families. Please also join them in the Parish Centre after Mass for a cup of tea and a chat.

Parish Notes 21st October

October 20, 2012 by Web Admin

Today is Mission Sunday Theme: “Growing in Communion”

“Faith is a gift that is given to us to be shared. It is a talent received so that it might bear fruit. It is a light that must never be hidden. It is the most important gift that has been
given to us in our lives and which we cannot keep to ourselves.” Pope Benedict XVI for Mission Sunday.
World Missions Ireland, the national office of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, agrees on projects to be funded and then sends the money directly to the mission Diocese, thus ensuring accountability and independent financial scrutiny.
The annual collection for the Missions replaces the Share collection today and your usual generous response would be appreciated.

Wedding Anniversaries Mass

On this Sunday at the 10.30 Mass we all share in the celebration with those who are celebrating significant anniversaries this year.
The text for the Renewal of Marriage Vows is reprinted here to allow everyone to join in
Please also join them after Mass for a Reception in the Parish Centre.

Penitential Rite

All: We are inspired by the Holy Family to live according to love. We confess our frailty and failure to live up to this ideal. We confess selfishness and self-centredness; our pride and reluctance to admit our wrongs; our impatience and intolerance.
We confess our lack of trust that we are loved by each other and by God; our fear to take the risk of loving; our hesitation in seizing opportunities to make love real.
In confessing our sin, we proclaim God’s mercy
and we pray for the waters of his compassion
to run gently over us and wash away our sin,
to purify our hearts and our intentions.

Renewal of Marriage Vows

Renewal of Marriage Vows
Fr. Pat: I invite you to profess your faith in the
love of God – a Trinity of persons – Father, Son
and Holy Spirit. Do you believe in the goodness
of human life, in God the creator of all?
All: We do
Fr. Pat:: Do you believe in Jesus, God’s own
beloved Son, in the power of his death and
resurrection and that good will triumph over evil?
All: We do
Fr. Pat:: Do you believe in God’s Spirit, living
within and amongst us, uniting us to Jesus and
calling us to love?
All: We do
Fr. Pat: Do you believe that we all share this call
and that responding to it we can change the
world? All: We do
Fr. Pat: With these convictions, I now invite you
to remember the promises you made on your
Wedding Day.

For those whose loved one has gone before them
to the Lord, I invite you, in your heart, to
remember your cherished commitment to your
marriage and so to grow in strength:
I now invite you all to renew your promises:
Husbands: I confirm and renew my gift of myself
to you. In my failure to love, I ask to be reconciled
with you. I thank you for your love and I thank
God for you.
Wives: I confirm and renew my gift of myself to
you. In my failure to love, I ask to be reconciled
with you. I thank you for your love and I thank
God for you.
Together: We thank you, good and gracious God,
because finding each other has made life so
special for us and because in our love we have
known your call. We thank you for our family and
home where we live the call to love. As we
renew our commitment we ask your blessing and
protection.
Fr. Pat: I call upon the Holy Trinity to bless all
those who celebrate special anniversaries today:
to bless them with the unity that is within God
to bless them with the diversity that is within God
to bless them with the intimacy that is within God
to bless them with the creativity that is within God
to bless them with the passion that is within God
and to draw them ever more deeply
and to draw them forever into the life that is God

We hope that the widowed women and men among us will go on witnessing to the best in the
in the one whom they have loved, to the qualities
they cherished and admired, By this they testify that the union continues in love.

Parish Visitation
Fr. Pat will continue his visitation on MOUNT PROSPECT AVENUE, this week the even numbers starting at the Vernon Avenue end.

Reaching out to the Sick, the Elderly, the Lonely & the Depressed

Reaching out to the Sick, the Elderly, the Lonely & the Depressed

The Sacrament of the Sick will be administered at the 10.30 am Mass this Sunday.
It is intended for those coping with the difficulties of sickness and /or old age. The words the Priest will use as he anoints your forehead and the palms of your hands are:
“Through this Holy Anointing may the Lord in His love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin, save you and raise you up.”
Sickness comes in many guises and while the Sacrament at times brings physical healing, it always helps the recipients to cope better with their difficulties. it offers first of all “the grace of the Holy Spirit”, the Spirit who brings peace and courage and then “raises you up” – We see Jesus in the Gospels bringing healing to the sick “those who were suffering from diseases of one kind or another” He also shows us the importance of prayer for the sick as he went off to a lonely place to pray.
Some suggestions of what we all can do:
Come to our weekly Mass for the sick on Mondays at 10 am and put the names of the sick in to our special book.
Like Jesus, pray for them and reach out to them – be aware of friends or neighbours who might be going through a difficult time.
The Priests and Ministers of the Eucharist would be delighted to bring the Lord in Holy Communion to the sick and the housebound – please contact Anne in the Parish Office on 8333602.
If there is a parishioner in hospital who would like a priest to visit, also please let us know.
We all need the healing touch of Jesus in so many ways – but remember that we too can be the hands of Jesus, reaching out to the sick, the lonely, the depressed
Please join us for a cuppa in the Parish Centre after the 10.30 Mass
Fr. Pat

The Ballad of Father Gilligan

The old priest Peter Gilligan was weary night and day
For half his flock were in their beds or under green sods lay.
Once, while he nodded on a chair at the moth-hour of eve
Another poor man sent for him, and he began to grieve.
‘I have no rest, nor joy, nor peace, for people die and die’
And then cried he, ‘God forgive, my body spake, not I!’
He knelt and leaning on the chair he prayed and fell asleep;
And the moth-hour went from the fields and stars began to peep.
They slowly into millions grew and leaves shook in the wind.
And God covered the world with shade, and whispered to mankind.
Upon the time of sparrow chirp when the moths came once more,
The old priest Peter Gilligan stood upright on the floor.
‘Mavrone, mavrone! The man has died, while I slept on the chair’;
He roused his horse out of its sleep and rode with little care.
He rode now as he never rode, by rocky lane and fen;
The sick man’s wife opened the door: ‘Father! You come again!’
‘And is the poor man dead?’ he cried. ‘He died an hour ago.’
The old priest Peter Gilligan in grief swayed to and fro.
‘when you were gone he turned and died, as merry as a bird.’
The old priest Peter Gilligan he knelt him at that word.
‘He who hath made the night of stars for souls who tire and bleed
Sent one of his great angels down to help me in my need.
‘He who is wrapped in purple robes, with planets in his care,
Had pity on the least of things, asleep upon a chair.
W.B. Yeats

Prayer for Older People

Take my hand, O Blessed Mother, hold it firmly lest I fall,
For I’m nervous when I’m walking so today I humbly call.
Guide me over every crossing, watch me while I’m on the stairs,
Help me in my undertakings, lessen many of my cares.
And when evening comes upon me, and I fear to be alone,
Once again, O Blessed Mother, take my hand and lead me home.

Reflection for the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Lord, You alone have the words of eternal life.” So answered Peter. The words of Jesus truly brought life to people.
“Go in peace, your sins are forgiven.” With these words he set sinners free.
“Fear not, it is I.” With these words he calmed the fears of his apostles when they thought they were lost.
“Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” With these words he challenged Peter to try again after a long night of failure.
“This day you will be with me in Paradise.” With these words he brought light into the dark world of a condemned man.
Jesus truly had the words of life. Yet many of his followers refused to believe in him and left him.
We live in a world that is full of contradictory voices and false prophets. May we not be led astray.
Jesus alone can give us eternal life if, like Peter, we stay with him even when many forsake him.
Flor McCarthy SDB
